IC-IMPACTS Centres of Excellence

IC-IMPACTS Centres of Excellence was established through the Canadian Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) Canada India Research Centre of Excellence competition as a new Centre dedicated to the development of research collaborations between Canada and India. Built as a vision of three of Canada’s research universities – The University of British Columbia, the University of Alberta, and the University of Toronto – IC-IMPACTS is a pan-Canadian Centre bringing together researchers, industry innovators, community leaders, and government agencies, from across India and Canada, to work hand-in-hand to find solutions to the key challenges that affect the quality of life of millions of people in Indian and Canadian communities.
IC-IMPACTS has designed its research program, networking and partnership strategy, HQP and knowledge mobilization programs to achieve four core goals:
- Develop and deliver novel solutions, technologies, and treatments to meet the identified needs of target communities through multi-sector and multidisciplinary research partnerships;
- Demonstrate on-the-ground impacts within three years through the successful translation of new knowledge, technologies and treatments within communities;
- Build local and national capacity for research and innovation through the development and training of talented, entrepreneurial researchers and innovators with understanding of the processes for translating and employing research and new technologies successfully into community contexts;
- Expand and enhance strategic networks and partnerships between research institutions, governments, non-governmental organizations, members of industry and community groups across and between Canada and India.
Value and Project duration: The maximum value of an IC-IMPACTS Collaborative Research Grant is $400,000 over a three-year period. Projects may be of two or three years in duration.
Applications for Collaborative Research Projects are invited in the following four areas:
- Safe and Sustainable Infrastructure
- Integrated Water Management
- Public Health
- Sociological, Interdisciplinary and Cross-Thematic Research

It is mandatory that all research projects submitted for consideration include the following:
- Be of a high international standard;
- Lead to a knowledge outcome or technology solution directly deployable within a community context that will impact the lives of Indian and Canadian citizens;
- Include meaningful engagement between Canadian and Indian researchers and involve at least one researcher from Canada and one researcher from India; and
- Include leveraged funding in the form of cash and/or in-kind contributions from partners to the project.
Indian-Canadian joint projects must be based on meaningful engagement and involve at least one researcher from Canada and one researcher from India.

The India-Canada Water for Health: Joint Call For Collaborative Research Innovation Proposals

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and IC-IMPACTS Centres of Excellence (IC-IMPACTS) of Canada will jointly fund Indian-Canadian research and innovation collaborations.
The Joint Call for Collaborative Research Innovation Projects in the area of “Water for Health” will support collaborative research projects focused on the development and evaluation of new technologies in each of the following areas:
- Monitoring and management of water borne or water related diseases using mobile or networked health technologies;
- Waste water treatment and impacts on water quality;
- Water purification biotechnologies;
- Heavy metals identification using biosensors; and,
- Sustainable waste-water infrastructure and management using biotechnologies.
Project duration and grant value: 1-3 years. The maximum combined budget from both IC-IMPACTS and DBT for any single project is $800,000 (i.e. maximum $400,000 Canadian dollars or equivalent in Rupees from each of IC-IMPACTS and DBT). Funding beyond the first year of the project will be contingent upon successful progress being made in the previous year as determined by the review processes in place by each funding organization.
Eligibility:
The research projects funded in this call are expected to be of a high international standard that will lead to a technology or solution directly impacting the lives of Indian and Canadian citizens. Indian-Canadian joint projects must be based on meaningful engagement, include a common project plan, and involve at least one researcher from Canada and one researcher from India.
All Canadian Researchers eligible to receive funding from IC-IMPACTS and tri-council agencies in Canada are eligible to apply as Principal Investigators from Canada with an Indian Principal Investigator. All Indian Researchers normally eligible to apply to DBT funding opportunities are eligible to apply as Principal Investigators from India with a Canadian Principal Investigator.

Idea to Innovation (I2I) Grants

Idea to Innovation (I2I) Grants accelerate the pre-competitive development of promising technology originating from the university and college sector and promote its transfer to a new or established Canadian company. The I2I Grants provide funding to college and university faculty members to support research and development projects with recognized technology transfer potential. This is achieved through defined phases by providing crucial assistance in the early stages of technology validation and market connection.
Four distinct funding options are proposed, which are characterized by the maturity of the technology or the involvement of an early-stage investment entity or an industrial partner.
- Market Assessment (up to 12 months)
- Phase I – Reduction-to-Practice Stage (up to 12 months)
- Phase IIa – Early-stage Investment Partner (6-8 months)
- Phase IIb – Partnership with a Canadian Company (up to 2 years)
Eligible research and development activities include (but are not limited to):
- refining and implementing designs;
- verifying application;
- conducting field studies;
- preparing demonstrations;
- building prototypes; and
- performing beta trials

Mitacs Accelerate PhD Fellowship

Mitacs Accelerate PhD fellowship gives PhD students and their faculty supervisor the opportunity to work closely with a private-sector partner using the latest tools and techniques available to them in both academic and industrial settings. Valued at $30,000 per year, the three-year research project engages PhD students’ expertise to address a longer-term research challenge

Mitacs-Accelerate is Canada’s premiere research internship program. Interns transfer their skills from theory to real-world application, while the companies gain a competitive advantage by accessing high-quality research expertise.
MITACS Accelerate Clusters
Mitacs-Accelerate clusters are an alternative for larger research projects involving multiple Graduate students and/or Post-doctoral Fellows. Applicants may apply once for an Accelerate Cluster involving a minimum of three interns, at least six 4-month internship segments, and a minimum of one industrial partner.
