Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF)
Advance Notice of Request for Proposals
RFP Notice: To be posted in December 2015
WERF plans to issue two Request for Proposals (RFPs) to support its Resource Recovery research program in the areas of dewaterability and nitrogen removal. The goal of WERF’s Resource Recovery program is to document recovery process technologies and their benefits, and to further investigate the potential value of these and other processes used to derive useful materials from wastewater.
Unintended Consequences of Resource Recovery on Overall Plant Performance
Value: Total WERF funding available is $175,000
Solving the Impacts on Dewaterability Properties Over the last few years, WERF has funded research on the removal and recovery of nutrients from wastewaterems. It has recently been reported that water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) that operate for enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) and/or phosphorus recovery are experiencing difficulties with the dewatering of anaerobically digested biosolids. WERF plans to issue an RFP to build upon the prior and ongoing body of research to determine if this phenomenon is more widespread, and to better understand dewaterability performance and its impact on overall resource recovery operations.
Understanding the Impacts of Low-Energy and Low-Carbon Nitrogen Removal Technologies on Bio-P and Nutrient Recovery Processes
Value: Total WERF funding available is $75,000
In WERF’s NTRY1R12 Resource Recovery as a Viable Treatment Alternative study, struvite crystallization was identified as the most common and effective extractive nutrient recovery method when phosphorus is accumulated through enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR). As a next step to this research, WERF plans to issue an RFP to examine how EBPR combined with a low-energy, low-carbon process (such as mainstream deammonification) impacts the efficiency of EBPR and the potential for extractive nutrient recovery.
Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP)
Public Works and Government Services Canada
Deadline: Continuous Intake (new)
Description
Created to bolster innovation in Canada’s business sector, the Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP) helps companies to bridge the pre-commercialization gap by procuring and testing late stage innovative goods and services within the federal government before taking them to market by:
• Awarding contracts to entrepreneurs with pre-commercial innovations through an open, transparent, competitive and fair procurement process.
• Testing and providing feedback to these entrepreneurs on the performance of their goods or services.
• Providing innovators with the opportunity to enter the marketplace with a successful application of their new goods and services.
• Providing information on how to do business with the Government of Canada.
BCIP targets innovations in the following priority areas:
Standard Component
• Environment
• Safety and security
• Health
• Enabling technologies
Military Component
• Command & Support
• Cyber-Security
• Protecting the Soldier
• Arctic and Maritime Security
• In-Service Support
• Training Systems

Scholarships in Water Resources
Canadian Water Resource Association
Deadline: January 30, 2016
The Canadian Water Resources Association annually offers five scholarships. These scholarships are available to graduate students whose programs of study focus upon applied, natural, or social science aspects of water resources. The scholarships will have the following values:
• Dillon Consulting Scholarship – $5,000
This scholarship will be awarded to the highest ranked of the applicants. Funding is provided by Dillon Consulting Limited on an annual basis.
• Ken Thomson Scholarship – $2,000
This scholarship will be awarded to the second highest ranked of the applicants. The Ken Thomson Scholarship is awarded from a special fund set up in his honour.
• CWRA Memorial Scholarship – $1,500
A tribute to CWRA Members remembered by their colleagues donations to the Scholarship Fund.
• 2 Scholarships – $1,500 each
These scholarships are funded from the general funds of the Canadian Water Resources Association.

MITACS
MITACS Accelerate Internships – Standard
Mitacs-Accelerate is Canada’s premiere research internship program. It connects companies with over 50 research-based universities through graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, who apply their specialized expertise to business research challenges. Interns transfer their skills from theory to real-world application, while the companies gain a competitive advantage by accessing high-quality research expertise.
MITACS Accelerate Clusters
Mitacs-Accelerate clusters are an alternative for larger research projects involving multiple Graduate students and/or Post-doctoral Fellows. Applicants may apply once for an Accelerate Cluster involving a minimum of three interns, at least six 4-month internship segments, and a minimum of one industrial partner.
For more information, please contact Anna Ziolecki or visit the MITACS website: http://www.mitacs.ca/accelerate
