Pre-commercialization Business Development Fund (PBDF)

Ontario Genomics’ Pre-commercialization Business Development Fund (PBDF) is a unique investment fund that is helping to enable the economic impact of outcomes of “omics” and life sciences research projects and technology development. Specifically, it aims to provide early-stage funding as companies (on their own or with academic collaborators) move towards commercial applications and to speed up transfer of products from lab to marketplace. The fund invests up to $100K per project, previous recipients have included Ontario universities, research institutes and companies.
Objectives
• Create economic results from ‘omics and life sciences research;
• Support scientific entrepreneurs; and
• Generate returns for future PBDF investments.
Requirements
For consideration by the PBDF, the project or opportunity must involve ‘omics, life sciences and associated technologies and fall in the proof-of-principle (validation) phase of research. The fund will look for a balance of best science with the best opportunity and will consider opportunities where ‘omics and life sciences are or have been key enabling components. In addition, the project must be novel and innovative.
Areas of consideration for the PBDF include, but are not restricted to:
• Biofuels, bioproducts
• Diagnostics, therapeutics
• Crop or livestock trait improvements
• Environmental management (related to water, mining, energy, other)
• Forestry, natural resources
• Laboratory and medical devices
• Food, nutrition
• Informatics including databases, software, other tools

Ontario Centres of Excellence

The Alberta-Ontario Program (AOP) supports cross-provincial collaborations between industry and academia to solve key industry challenges in both provinces. Industry-academic projects can also leverage existing NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) programs that fall within NSERC’s mandate. Other programs may also be considered as federal contributions to the Program on a case-by-case basis.
Jointly managed by Alberta Innovates-Technology Futures (AITF) and Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE), the Alberta-Ontario Program focuses on solving industry challenges that can be addressed with research and development activities and have economic benefits for both provinces (e.g., job retention and creation, increased productivity and competitiveness, knowledge transfer, industry revenue growth, etc.). Companies may use research results to their own advantage or for the benefit of their supply chains.
AITF and OCE will match industry and research teams within and across the provinces to maximize potential for the development of innovative solutions.
Priorities
The AOP prioritizes projects that creatively address industrial challenges in the following industry sectors, identified as high-potential areas for Alberta and Ontario:

Call for Proposals: Knowledge Integration and Mobilization for Resilient, Sustainable Municipal Systems

Project Objective
To integrate, share, and apply existing knowledge that advances municipal needs in the areas of climate resiliency and financial sustainability of municipal water systems
Canadian Water Network’s Canadian Municipal Water Consortium is soliciting proposals for projects that will synthesize, mobilize and apply existing knowledge that enables municipalities or service providers to establish more sustainable and resilient cities.
Municipal water systems are becoming increasingly vulnerable to large shifts in weather patterns, including infrastructure damage due to floods and extreme cold; water security and quality issues due to droughts and wildfires; and environmental and health impacts due to storm and sanitary sewer overflows.
Additionally, aging infrastructure and a growing backlog of deferred maintenance requires innovative solutions and the implementation of robust financial models to ensure municipalities have adequate funds to maintain water services and reliable financing options to pay for future upgrades.

Created to bolster innovation in Canada’s business sector, the Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP) helps companies to bridge the pre-commercialization gap by procuring and testing late stage innovative goods and services within the federal government before taking them to market by:
• Awarding contracts to entrepreneurs with pre-commercial innovations through an open, transparent, competitive and fair procurement process.
• Testing and providing feedback to these entrepreneurs on the performance of their goods or services.
• Providing innovators with the opportunity to enter the marketplace with a successful application of their new goods and services.

MITACS Accelerate Internships – Standard
Mitacs-Accelerate is Canada’s premiere research internship program. It connects companies with over 50 research-based universities through graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, who apply their specialized expertise to business research challenges. Interns transfer their skills from theory to real-world application, while the companies gain a competitive advantage by accessing high-quality research expertise.
MITACS Accelerate Clusters
Mitacs-Accelerate clusters are an alternative for larger research projects involving multiple Graduate students and/or Post-doctoral Fellows. Applicants may apply once for an Accelerate Cluster involving a minimum of three interns, at least six 4-month internship segments, and a minimum of one industrial partner.
