Urban Water Research Centre is a collective of experts whose mission is to establish a healthy urban water cycle in support of building healthy cities through research, education, and policy. RUW comprises more than 40 members across 6 faculties and 13 departments. Our researchers work on all aspects of water in both natural and built environments, ranging from local work to studies across multiple watersheds. Research includes modeling municipal infrastructure services, urbanizing watersheds, green infrastructure/LID, water/wastewater optimization, microbiology, aquatic organisms, engineered wetlands, oxygen transfer, phosphorus transport and more. We also undertake a number of water related policy and education initiatives.

Urban Water Research Centre

The Urban Water Research Centre (UWRC) is a multi-disciplinary collective of over 40 experts across 6 faculties and 13 Departments.

The UWRC has dedicated offices, research support, and laboratories to support large scale, as well as, fine detailed analytical and data driven studies. Our experts are working on hydraulics and flushability in municipal water infrastructure, wastewater treatment technologies, surveillance of wastewater to monitor public health, contaminants of emerging concern and watersheds, green infrastructure and low impact development, road salt and freshwater salination. UWRC also undertakes water related policy and education initiatives.

PHYSICAL FACILITIES

UWRC Laboratories

In addition to individual research labs, the UWRC has two dedicated laboratories for collaborative research.

The Analytical Lab is a 2000 sq foot space used for detailed analytical and data driven study, and features equipment such as: mass spectrometer, laser infrared chemical imaging, high performance liquid chromatography, muffle furnaces, RO filtration, fumehoods and chemicals. The Wet Lab is a 2500 sq foot space where larger projects take place, and features: an experimental wetland, a culture holding room with 50 aquaria, grow lamps, simulations of green infrastructure, sewers, and a flushability lab.
